Green Bay - Tom Clements, a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, has turned down the chance to become head coach of the CFL Toronto Argonauts.
"I'm happy in the NFL," said Clements, who is in his third season coaching quarterbacks for the Green Bay Packers .
A source close to the situation said Clements was the first person contacted by Argonauts management. However, the source said Clements wasn't the least bit interested.
If he had gone after the job, Clements said he still didn't know if he would have had a good chance of landing it.
"It's hard to say," he said. "I think they had a long list."
The contact apparently was made about a month ago. Clements indicated that it was flattering.
The Argonauts fired coach Rich Stubler in September, then coaxed legendary CFL coach Don Matthews out of retirement to finish the season.
Clements, 55, played for four of the eight CFL teams in his 12-year career, but not Toronto. In the early 1990s, Clements said he did interview for a head-coaching job in the CFL but wouldn't identify the team.
Settling in: Aaron Rouse (ankle) practiced all week and seems ready to go but the Packers aren't changing from their lineup Sunday in which Charles Woodson played strong safety and Tramon Williams played left cornerback.
"I wouldn't be surprised if it goes that way the rest of the year," coach Mike McCarthy said Friday. "But we'll take it one week at a time. It's common that when corners do get up in age, some have the ability to transition to safety. I'm not saying that's why he's back there but it's definitely a great option to have."
Atari Bigby, the starting strong safety for 1? seasons, is out with what he called a sprained shoulder. However, Bigby said the injury was "not that serious" and indicated that he expected to return this season.
On Friday, Williams was fined $5,000 by the NFL for unnecessarily grabbing the facemask of Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith.
No malice: Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers was fined $10,000 by the league for belting Aaron Rodgers late and out of bounds.
"I talked to him after the play," Rodgers said. "He's fast. I shouldn't have relaxed. It was a close play. It's a tough deal. They're protecting the quarterback, and I appreciate that."
Injury list: Linebacker Brandon Chillar (groin) missed another day of practice and was listed as questionable. Desmond Bishop would replace him.
Center Scott Wells (concussion) practiced Friday and will start.
Running back DeShawn Wynn (calf) practiced the last two days but still was questionable. The other questionable player was defensive end Jeremy Thompson (ankle), who was limited.
In Houston, strong safety Nick Ferguson (knee) sat out all week and will be replaced by Brandon Harrison, a fifth-round pick in 2007 who has started four of 11 games this year. He's big, smart, slow and undisciplined.
Defensive end Anthony Weaver (knee) and free safety Eugene Wilson (ankle) practiced and will start. The starting quarterback will be Matt Schaub (knee).
Ready to roll: Quarterback Matt Flynn has replaced departed punter Derrick Frost as the holder, a role he filled for Louisiana State the last four years.
"I'm experienced," Flynn said. "I've done it in big-time situations. Obviously, never the NFL."
A native of Tyler, Texas, Flynn ventured out onto Lambeau Field after practice Friday to take some snaps and work with the specialists. The temperature was about 14 degrees.
"The turf was hard," Flynn said. "This is by far the coldest weather I've ever been in. I tried it bare-handed and with some gloves. I'll be all right."
The new punter, 238-pound Jeremy Kapinos, wore shorts during the workout.
"I didn't want to bundle up because I'm not going to do that Sunday," he said. "It was just awesome being out there."
Rodgers also will be starting his first game in frigid weather.
"The key for a quarterback is to keep your hands warm," he said. "The ball gets slicker when it gets cold. You have to have that grip and the dexterity in your fingers by keeping them warm."
New deals: Defensive tackle Alfred Malone, cornerback Joe Porter and Kapinos signed two-year deals for minimum wage.
Malone's contract is worth $830,000. Porter and Kapinos signed deals for $680,000.
