GRAND RAPIDS -- Mike Skorupski said he looked to "embrace the awfulness," but it proved too much to bear.

"I bleed Honolulu blue," said the 45-year-old Plainfield Township man and traumatized Detroit Lions fan. "I'm disappointed in them.

"I figured we could win one game."

Alas. Purr.

The Lions lived up to expectations Sunday, capping off a perfectly awful 0-16 season with a customary loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, 31-21.

They managed to keep it close, tying the Packers at 14-14 about five minutes into the third quarter and drawing to within a field goal in the fourth. Glimmers of hope, however, turned out to be more like poison than salve to beleaguered Lions devotees desperate for a win.

"Unbelievable," Skorupski said.

To the feline faithful: Now might be a good time to kindly ask someone important for 16 afternoons of your life back.

A tricky refund to finagle, sure, but what do you have to lose? Just more time, really, and you don't seem to care much about that.

Lions fans who apparently had nothing better to do filled West Michigan sports bars to toast their favorite failure of a Football franchise.

Skorupski, donning a "2008 Preseason Champions"

T-shirt, joined a half-dozen buddies at Vitale's Sports Bar at 3868 West River Drive NE to get an eyeful of the ugly. Any hope he had was buffeted by the battle cries of friend Kurt Hoopingarner, 38, of Grand Rapids.

An Upper Peninsula native, Hoopingarner's allegiances lie with Packer Nation.

"This is the highlight of the year -- that we beat the Lions twice," he said.

While most Lions fans pulled for that magic win that could turn everything around, others cheered for the donut.

"I'm rooting for them to lose so they can win at something," said 40-year-old Jamie Hassen, of Grand Rapids.

At Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar, 3050 Alpine Ave. NW, bartenders and wait staff hoped that a rare weekend drink special would attract more patrons.

A flier read "Is 0-16 a reason to celebrate? You bet! $1 off 23 oz. domestic drafts 1 to 4 p.m."

"(The Lions) have gotten so bad that we have to offer specials to draw people in," said 23-year-old bartender Chris Middaugh. "We never offer specials."

Packers fans took up a good share of the bar and were by far the loudest. Raucous applause mixed with mild oaths filled the watering hole following frequent Lions follies.

"There's nothing better than seeing another great loss at Lambeau for them," said 37-year-old Christine Berles, of Newaygo.

Charles Rimpson, 42, of Wyoming, nursed a beer as he watched all traces of athletic respectability stumble out the door.

"This is embarrassing," he said. "You just can't believe that a professional team can't find a way to win at least one game."

Rimpson added that wide receiver Calvin Johnson and placekicker Jason Hanson are the only "two good players on the whole team."

"Any time a kicker is one of your best players, that's a problem," he said.

Chris Strazisar, a 43-year-old Hudsonville resident, said he vowed not to be a Lions fan until the organization fired former President and CEO Matt Millen. Now he regrets his lack of stipulations.

"Now that he's fired, I'm sorry I came back," he said.
