Danieal Manning is in good position to remain in the mix as the Bears' kickoff returner after giving the special teams a spark in the fourth quarter at Green Bay.
Coach Lovie Smith wouldn't commit to any moves this early in the week but said it was good to get Manning back. Devin Hester was hit-and-miss against the Packers. He did have a 48-yard return to open the third quarter that was nullified by a penalty that didn't affect the play. Hester has hesitated on occasion, and Manning gets the ball and goes.
''Has [Hester] been hesitant?'' Smith said. ''I don't know what word you want to give it. We haven't gotten a lot of production from our returns, up until this point.''
Hester had the first two-touchdown game of his career at St. Louis in 2006 when he ran back two kickoffs for scores.
''It's tough,'' he said Monday. ''What can I say? We've been embarrassed. We didn't come out and play well. We didn't do the things that needed to be done to win the game, and it showed.''
A shot ... and a hole
The Bears are expected to make certain the league office is aware of the cheap shot Packers defensive lineman Colin Cole took on Hester out of bounds at the end of a second-quarter return. Cole was penalized for unnecessary roughness.
He would have seemed a better target for a punch than the wall in the visitors' locker room at Lambeau Field that sustained a fist-sized hole over the weekend.
''I don't know if we'll ever know who did it,'' a Packers spokesman told the Wisconsin State Journal. ''We're not certain how it occurred. We will make the appropriate repairs, and the visitors' locker room will be ready for the Panthers when they come in for our next home game.''
Bears spokesman Scott Hagel said the team was unaware of any property damage.
Rookie debut
First-round pick Chris Williams got his first work on offense when he was inserted at left tackle for the Bears' final five-play drive. On the first snap, Packers end Aaron Kampman blew past Williams on the first step, forcing Rex Grossman to spin out of a sack. The next four plays were uneventful.
''It's good to get him in the game,'' Smith said. ''He's been practicing, making progress. He's kind of gotten his training camp a little bit later. It's always good to see a guy get his first action.''
John St. Clair moved inside to left guard to make room, and Josh Beekman was sidelined.
Extra points
Smith wouldn't commit to linebacker Darrell McClover returning from his pulled hamstring this season. Because he is the seventh linebacker, the Bears could find special-teams help at any position.
- The Bears' Nov. 30 game at Minnesota will not be moved under the league's flexible scheduling plan and remains a 7:15 p.m. NBC broadcast.
