Other than no-show Ryan Grant and still-retired Brett Favre, defensive tackle Ryan Pickett was the most notable player not on the field for the first week of training camp.

Pickett, the anchor of the interior of the line, is on the non-football injury list. He suffered a strained left hamstring while working out in Green Bay a week before camp started July 28.

Coach Mike McCarthy said the team is being smart with Pickett, an eighth-year veteran, in not trying to rush him back. He likely won't be ready for the Aug. 11 preseason opener against Cincinnati.

PLAYER
--WR Shaun Bodiford was placed on injured reserve when training camp opened July 28. The third-year player suffered a back injury at an undisclosed time in the offseason and underwent surgery in July. It's the second time in three years Bodiford landed on IR with the Packers - he sustained a broken leg late in the 2006 season.

--DT Justin Harrell is spending the early part of camp on the physically unable to perform list. Harrell, the team's first-round draft pick in 2007, suffered a setback in July in his recovery from April surgery for a ruptured disk in his lower back. The team is listing Harrell's status as week to week for getting back on the field, though he acknowledged more surgery could be in the offing, which would jeopardize his season.

--C Scott Wells suffered a pulled muscle in his back in practice Aug. 1 and was sidelined indefinitely. Wells didn't consider the injury to be serious. Junius Coston was tapped to replace Wells with the No. 1 unit for the interim.

--CB Tramon Williams suffered a hip flexor in the second practice of opening day of camp and was sidelined the remainder of the week. Williams had the inside track for the nickel-back role. Jarrett Bush, Will Blackmon and rookie Pat Lee are the other candidates for the job.

--RB DeShawn Wynn was back in the training room after suffering a mild concussion in practice July 30. He didn't practice the rest of the week. Wynn, who was expected to challenge Brandon Jackson for the No. 2 halfback role behind Ryan Grant, was dogged by medical issues as a rookie last year, which ended prematurely with a shoulder injury in October.

--TE Tory Humphrey experienced discomfort in his Achilles' on Aug. 1 and had to miss the next day of camp. The backup suffered a season-ending broken leg on the first day of camp last year.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Daryn Colledge vs. Allen Barbre for starting LG -- Colledge, whose hold on the starting job after two years seemed tenuous at best when camp opened, has a track record of rising to the occasion when he's pushed by someone. So far, he has met the challenge from Barbre, a developmental prospect as a rookie last year. The biggest knock against Colledge has been maddening spurts of inconsistency, but those hadn't come to the forefront a week into camp. The plan for the first couple weeks is to give Colledge and Barbre a fair shake in the competition by having one player work with the No. 1 unit every two practices. A decision figures to be made after the Packers play their first two preseason games in a span of six days, starting Aug. 11 against Cincinnati.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Brady Poppinga vs. Brandon Chillar for starting SLB -- In the battle of young players who received substantial contracts from the team this year, the money right now is on Poppinga to retain the starting role he's held for two years. He's been taking the majority of the reps with the No. 1 unit. What might work in free-agent signee Chillar's favor is the coaches are experimenting with Poppinga, a pass rusher in college, as a hand-down lineman in certain situations. ... Tramon Williams vs. Jarrett Bush vs. Will Blackmon vs. Pat Lee for nickel back. Williams sustained a hip injury on the first day of camp and didn't practice the rest of the long week. His absence opened the door for Bush, and to a lesser extent Blackmon and rookie Lee, to fill the important situational role. It would seem to be Williams' job to lose, but being sidelined for an extended period would leave it on the table for the taking.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WR Ruvell Martin -- The team's second-round selection of Kansas State playmaker Jordy Nelson with its first pick in the draft didn't bode well for Martin to have much of a role for the offense in 2008, if not a roster spot. Martin was destined to be no higher than fifth on the depth chart, after Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, James Jones and Nelson. Yet, with a week of training camp in the book, the unassuming Martin had made a big statement about his future with a number of significant plays on the field. "I don't think he's on the bubble. I'll be the first one to tell you that," quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. "There's no doubt, in my mind, and I'm not making the decisions. Ruvell Martin is a solid player." Rodgers has helped Martin's cause in the early going. The two forged a friendship after Martin was signed to the practice squad late in the 2005 season, Rodgers' first with the Packers. As Rodgers gets his feet wet in the starting role for the first time, he hasn't been bashful to throw to Martin, especially when plays break down. The 6-foot-4 Martin is easy to find and has good hands. A prominent play in camp has been a fade throw from Rodgers to Martin in the end zone for an easy six points.

ROOKIE REPORT: WR Jordy Nelson, who excelled in the slot in college, has been getting a crash course at all three receiver positions early in training camp. Nelson, no better than fourth on the depth chart, is being used in multiple-receiver formations. ... QB Brian Brohm is beginning to settle in with the No. 2 role behind Aaron Rodgers, but the return of Brett Favre figures to throw a wrench in that. Brohm has his head in the voluminous playbook every night of camp, but said he feels more comfortable in running the offense than he did in the offseason. ... CB Pat Lee has been working behind Charles Woodson on the left side and is challenging Tramon Williams, Jarrett Bush and Will Blackmon for the nickel role. ... G Josh Sitton is No. 2 on the depth chart at right guard behind incumbent starter Jason Spitz. Sitton, though, could make things interesting as camp goes on. He has dominated his matchups in one-on-one pass-rush drills and has been getting some reps with the No. 1 unit, when Spitz has moved to center for spot duty.

INJURY REPORT: DTs Ryan Pickett (hamstring) and Justin Harrell (back) weren't ready for the start of training camp July 28 and are out indefinitely. Harrell is on the PUP list. Although the team considers his status to be week to week, Harrell might need to undergo a second, possibly season-ending surgical procedure for a ruptured disk, which he sustained at the outset of offseason workouts in March. ... C Scott Wells was sidelined for a brief time after he pulled a muscle in his back Aug. 1. Junius Coston took over for Wells with the starting unit. ... CB Tramon Williams, a leading candidate for nickel back, was out indefinitely after suffering a hip flexor on the first day of camp. ... RB DeShawn Wynn sustained a mild concussion July 30 and didn't practice the rest of the first week of camp.
