After the two sides agreed to disagree about what direction they would take together moving forward, the Packers washed their hands of quarterback Brett Favre on Aug. 6.
The club traded its 16-year starter and the league's only three-time MVP to the New York Jets for a conditional fourth-round draft pick.
If the 38-year-old Favre can remain the iron man of his position - he has started 275 straight games since 1992 - the Packers stand to be compensated better for the 2009 draft.
The fourth-round pick would be upgraded to a third-round choice if Favre takes 50 percent of the snaps with the Jets this season.
The selection would become a second-round pick if Favre takes 70 percent of the snaps and the Jets earn a berth in the playoffs.
The Packers would wind up with a first-round choice instead if Favre takes 80 percent of the snaps and the Jets wind up in Super Bowl XLIII on Feb. 1.
A poison pill was included in the provisions of the trade agreement. To all but block the Jets from trading Favre to his preferred landing spot of Minnesota, New York would have to give the Packers three first-round draft picks if it were to move him to an NFC North team.
PLAYER
--RB Ryan Grant suffered a strained hamstring and was questionable to play in the Packers' preseason opener against Cincinnati on Monday night. The injury came on after Grant, who missed the first week of training camp because of a contract impasse, practiced with the team only two days. Grant was sidelined for workouts Aug. 8 and 9.
--RB Brandon Jackson, who dropped out of practice Aug. 5 with a sprained ankle but returned to the field later in the week, was in line to make the start at halfback against the Bengals with Grant possibly out.
--DT Ryan Pickett had yet to be cleared to return to action after being out the first two weeks of camp because of a sore hamstring. Pickett is the leader of the interior of the line.
--C Scott Wells remained on the mend after suffering a pulled muscle in his back Aug. 1. Jason Spitz, penciled in at the start of camp as the starter at right guard, has been filling in for Wells with the No. 1 unit.
--OL Josh Sitton was expected to make the start at right guard in the preseason opener. Sitton, a fourth-round draft pick this year, has been stout as a blocker after the first two weeks of camp and benefited when incumbent Spitz was moved to center to spell the injured Wells.
--WR Greg Jennings, the team's No. 2 wideout, also was iffy for the first exhibition game because of knee soreness that kept him out of practice for two days late last week.
--CB Tramon Williams recovered from a hip flexor he had sustained on the first day of camp July 28 in less than a week and has the edge in a deep mix of contenders for the nickel-back job.
--OT Orrin Thompson was carted off the practice field Aug. 6 with an ankle injury that sidelined him the rest of the week. Thompson had been the No. 2 left tackle behind Chad Clifton.
--LS J.J. Jansen, an undrafted rookie, is by himself in what was a competition to replace retired Rob Davis as the team's long snapper. Thomas Gafford was released Aug. 3 to make room for the signing of Grant to a four-year contract.
--CB Jarrett Bush, who couldn't cut it as the nickel back last season, is being cross-trained as a safety. The switch in the secondary has yielded better results.
--CB Condrew Allen, an undrafted rookie, was placed on injured reserve Aug. 4 because of a knee injury. The Packers subsequently reached an injury settlement with and released Allen, who has the distinction of giving up his roster spot to QB Brett Favre, who was reinstated by the league from the reserve-retired list.
--CB Scorpio Babers will go down in the history book as the player who replaced the legendary Favre on the Packers' 80-man camp roster. Babers was signed Aug. 8, two days after Favre was traded to the New York Jets. The 5-foot-11, 194-pound Babers was cut by Miami, who had signed him as an undrafted free agent this year, earlier in training camp.
BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Will Blackmon vs. Tramon Williams for primary return duties -- While Williams had the nod early in camp to serve as the nickel back on defense, fellow cornerback Blackmon was being given first crack to return punts as the Packers prepared to play their first preseason game Monday night against Cincinnati. Both young players can be electric on runbacks - each had a long punt return for a touchdown during the second half of last season. Blackmon was pegged as the team's long-term solution for a previously substandard return game when it took him in the fourth round of the 2006 draft, but a fractured right foot limited his opportunities his first two years in the league. If Blackmon can finally stay healthy, the Packers will have a potent 1-2 punch will Blackmon and Williams as their deep men on kickoffs. Sure-handed veteran Charles Woodson is the fallback on punt returns.
OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Josh Sitton vs. Jason Spitz for starting RG -- Sitton was a surprise standout through the first two weeks of camp - he was nearly flawless in his matchups in the one-on-one pass-blocking drills - and appears on his way to earning the starting job as a rookie for the start of the season. Incumbent Spitz was moved to center after only five days of camp because of a back injury to Scott Wells. Once Wells returns, Spitz likely will challenge Daryn Colledge and Allen Barbre for the starting vacancy at left guard.
Brady Poppinga vs. Brandon Chillar for starting SLB -- In the battle of young players who received substantial contracts from the team this year, the money right now is on Poppinga to retain the starting role he's held for two years. He's been taking the majority of the reps with the No. 1 unit. What might work in free-agent signee Chillar's favor is the coaches are experimenting with Poppinga, a pass rusher in college, as a hand-down lineman in certain situations.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: CB Pat Lee -- In the space of two weeks since training camp opened July 28, the rookie has gone from a long shot in a crowded field to becoming a serious challenger for the nickel-back spot on defense. Tramon Williams is the front-runner, but Lee's playmaking skills in the early going have elicited raves from the coaches. Lee was the third of the team's three second-round selections in the April draft. The Auburn product is a natural bump-and-run defender. He led the defense with four pass breakups and five tackles in extensive action in the intrasquad scrimmage at sold-out Lambeau Field on Aug. 3, when starting cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson were held out. Lee's only flub of consequence in the game-simulated environment was a pass-interference penalty while aggressively covering Donald Driver on a deep pass. Lee continued to be a playmaker later in the week, intercepting two passes in a practice Aug. 8.
ROOKIE REPORT: G Josh Sitton has emerged as the starter at right guard, in part because of a strong start to training camp with his dominant blocking skills and also because incumbent Jason Spitz has filled in for an injured Scott Wells at center. ... CB Pat Lee has jumped out with his ball skills early in camp and is drawing consideration for the nickel-back role. ... DE Jeremy Thompson missed practice time late last week after suffering a neck stinger. ... LS J.J. Jansen has the specialist job for the foreseeable future after the release of Thomas Gafford on Aug. 3.
INJURY REPORT: DT Ryan Pickett (hamstring) still hadn't practiced after two weeks of training camp. The tackle spots were considerably thin for the team's first preseason game Monday night against Cincinnati. Besides Pickett, Johnny Jolly (hip/shoulder), Daniel Muir (shin) and Justin Harrell (back), the latter of whom is on the PUP list, were dealing with medical issues. ... DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (knee) hasn't fully recovered from surgery in the spring and has been occasionally out of practice in the early part of camp. ... RB Ryan Grant (hamstring), WR Greg Jennings (knee) and C Scott Wells (back) weren't likely to be in the starting lineup for the exhibition opener, though their injuries aren't considered serious. ...
