Green Bay Packers Notes, Quotes 2009-03-11
--Onetime Packers pass-rushing standout Vonnie Holliday is interested in returning to Green Bay, but the front office appears to be lukewarm on the idea.

The 33-year-old Holliday was cut by the Miami Dolphins on March 2 and subsequently was lining up visits with other teams. None of those was the Packers.

"I would love to see that," Holliday told the Wisconsin State Journal when asked about a return to the Packers, "but they haven't really made any serious efforts.

"There's been a little talk here and there - 'Hey, what's going on?' - but nothing aggressive on their part. We'll see what happens."

The defensive end was Green Bay's first-round draft pick in 1998. He spent five seasons with the team and ranks eighth on the Packers' all-time sacks list with 32.

The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Holliday has experience in the 3-4 defensive scheme Green Bay is implementing this year, and he played two years in Miami for Dom Capers, the Packers' new defensive coordinator.

The Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions were among the teams to have contact with Holliday after the Dolphins released him.

--As long as right tackle Mark Tauscher is on the mend after having reconstructive surgery on his left knee in mid-January, the Packers aren't in a hurry to re-sign the unrestricted free agent.

In the meantime, the nine-year veteran starter could be looking to play elsewhere and not too far from his native Wisconsin. The Minnesota Vikings, who have a gaping hole at right tackle, reportedly have shown interest in Tauscher and no doubt would love to deplete the personnel of their NFC North rivals.

Tauscher isn't expected to make a full recovery from the second torn ACL he sustained in the knee until the start of training camp.

--Defensive end Michael Montgomery, the team's other unrestricted free agent, drew some initial interest in free agency.

Montgomery, a four-year player whom the Packers aren't expected to re-sign, was scheduled for a visit with the Atlanta Falcons. The arrangement was scrapped, however, when the Falcons re-signed defensive end Chauncey Davis.

Packers fullback John Kuhn, a restricted free agent, had visits with the Arizona Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals. Green Bay had made Kuhn a low tender offer of $1.01 million and would stand to receive no compensation if it doesn't match an offer Kuhn would receive in free agency because he's an undrafted player.

Starting safety Atari Bigby was the only player among seven restricted free agents for Green Bay to receive a second-round tender of $1.545 million. The Packers would get a second-round draft pick in return if Bigby received an offer from another team and Green Bay declined to match it.

Tight end Tory Humphrey and receiver Shaun Bodiford weren't tendered offers as restricted free agents.

--The NFL set the order of selections for the April 25-26 draft.

Not including potential compensatory choices, the Packers have nine picks in the seven-round process, with four of those in the first three rounds (out of top 83 selections).

Green Bay has two picks in both the third and sixth rounds. The 83rd overall pick in the third round is the compensation from the New York Jets for the Packers' trade of quarterback Brett Favre before last season.

The Packers' other early selections will come at nine, 41 and 73.

One of the sixth-round choices came from the New Orleans Saints, who acquired a seventh-round pick from the Packers in last year's draft.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "They're going to give me the reins, so to speak, to the position and just let me have it. I feel like I'll definitely be able to make plays and do what I'm able to do best, and that is to disrupt and make plays." -- Defensive tackle Colin Cole, primarily a backup the previous five seasons with the Packers, on signing as an unrestricted free agent with the Seattle Seahawks to become a starter.
