Green Bay Packers Notes, Quotes 2009-03-01
--While general manager Ted Thompson didn't tip his hand at the scouting combine in Indianapolis about whether he would step out of character and be aggressive in free agency, he was open about the team's interests in rewarding top receiver Greg Jennings.

"He's one of several players that we're going to continue to talk to and try to work something out as we go forward," Thompson said.

Jennings, coming off a monster season with 80 catches for 1,292 yards and nine touchdowns, will be entering the final year of his four-year rookie contract. Getting him locked up with a contract extension before the start of next season is a priority for Thompson, who had nearly $30 million in salary-cap space as free agency started Feb. 27.

"I'm sure we'll able to get something done," Thompson said. "I don't think we've had many specific conversations with his people. But, he's one of the players that we would like to make sure he stays a Packer."

Other starters who also have contracts up after 2009 and could command a new deal before then are Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins, defensive lineman Johnny Jolly and guards Daryn Colledge and Jason Spitz.

--Thompson said the team would like to retain its three unrestricted free agents this year: right tackle Mark Tauscher, defensive end Michael Montgomery and defensive tackle Colin Cole.

The return of Tauscher, a starter since his rookie season with the club in 2000, is up in the air as he will need the entire offseason to recover from reconstructive surgery in mid-January for a torn ACL. The Packers are allowing Tauscher to do his rehab at their facilities.

"Mark is definitely part of the plan as you move forward, but really when I look at Mark right now, he is in a medical category as far as how we move forward and so forth," head coach Mike McCarthy said. "But, he is there also every day. I see him a lot down in the training room, and I know he is progressing well through his rehab."

Montgomery and Cole have been role players in the defense and aren't thought to be good fits for the new 3-4 scheme.

--When pressed for a response to a scathing comment recently made by former Packers quarterback Brett Favre, Thompson pleaded ignorance and danced around the touchy issue during his press conference at the combine Feb. 20.

Favre, who retired a second time Feb. 11, told Sports Illustrated's Peter King that he was interested in "sticking it to Ted" when he came out of retirement before last season and Thompson refused to take the three-time league MVP back, instead trading him to the New York Jets.

While saying he wasn't up on all of Favre's recent comments, Thompson added, "I'll tell you what, I've done a pretty good job of staying away from that. Brett's a great player. We congratulate him on his retirement, and outside of that, I don't think it's productive for me to comment."

--The harsh economy persuaded the Packers to not raise ticket prices for home games next season. The club had enacted a price increase every other year the last several years, last doing so in 2007.

"We felt this was appropriate for our ticket holders," team president Mark Murphy told packers.com. "We're sensitive to the situation many of our fans may be in, and hopefully holding prices is helpful to them. We're all going through this together and everyone is taking measures to deal with the situation they find themselves in, both at an individual and business level."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "That's going to be more of a medical decision than it is a football decision. Mark's a really good football player. We hope that he's going to be with us going forward. But, we're a long ways from being able to make that decision." -- General manager Ted Thompson on possibly re-signing veteran right tackle Mark Tauscher, an unrestricted free agent who is expected to be sidelined the entire offseason after undergoing surgery for a torn ACL on Jan. 15.
