Green Bay Packers Notes, Quotes 2008-12-09
--Head coach Mike McCarthy left no shortcoming unmentioned Monday when he dissected the abominable performance by the defense in the Packers' 24-21 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday.

The Texans, with Matt Schaub back at quarterback after a lengthy absence because of a knee injury, lit up Green Bay for a franchise-record 549 yards. Schaub completed 28 of 42 passes for 414 yards and two touchdowns and led Houston on a nine-play, 75-yard drive in the final 2 minutes that culminated with a game-winning, 40-yard field goal by Kris Brown as time expired.

The Texans also had 123 rushing yards on offense, led by rookie Steve Slaton's 120 in 26 carries.

"We had plenty of corrections to go around," McCarthy lamented. "You can start with the run-game defense. There were times there we didn't get to the right gap a couple times (and) our tackling wasn't what it needed to be. The pass defense, the pass rush did not factor, and our pass defense was put in tough situations, and they won the one-on-one routes, particularly in third down."

--The Packers have lost three straight games and five of their last six contests to drop to 5-8. They're not mathematically eliminated from postseason contention, but their prospects are slim with a three-game deficit to make up on NFC North leader Minnesota with only three weeks left in the regular season.

McCarthy insisted Monday that his team, which is the youngest in the league, won't be mailing it in the rest of the way.

"Hang your head, that's something that I think our whole football team won't really take part in," McCarthy said. "We need to win a football game, and we'll make that perfectly clear when we get together for our meetings - young or old (players). Everybody's disappointed; everybody's frustrated. No one's happy about what's gone on here. But, we know the only people that can fix it (are) us. That will be our focus."
