Green Bay Packers Notes, Quotes 2008-10-17
--Less than four weeks after suffering what originally was believed to be a season-ending spleen injury, veteran cornerback Al Harris was on the practice field Wednesday.

Harris did some conditioning work off to the side and, with the blessing of head coach Mike McCarthy, jumped in to catch some balls from the quarterbacks during individual drills.

Harris wore a protective vest over his chest in his brief time on the field.

McCarthy had said Monday that the latest scan on Harris' spleen, which he injured in a collision with linebacker A.J. Hawk in the Sept. 21 game against Dallas, was encouraging and indicated that Harris could be cleared to return to game action Nov. 2 following the bye week.

On Wednesday, though, McCarthy didn't completely rule out Harris from playing in some fashion Sunday against Indianapolis.

"I would say Al is doubtful for Sunday," McCarthy said. "Al and I talked again at practice. He was able to do a lot of the individual drills, more extensive conditioning. He feels great. Mentally, he feels he could play. We're just going to follow the direction of the doctors."

As it stands, CB Tramon Williams will remain the starter opposite Charles Woodson. Williams has an interception in each of the last three games as Harris' replacement.

--Woodson, who leads the defense with a co-NFL-high four interceptions, and Williams each had a fourth-quarter pick to help the Packers ice a 27-17 win at Seattle last Sunday.

Defensive mates and even a few on the offensive side congratulated Woodson and Williams as they came off the field after the interceptions by shaking their hands as if they were in a business environment, not on a football field.

Williams' explanation for what might catch on in Green Bay as a celebration fad?

"You can't do too much more in this league," he said. "So, you've got to just come up with something classy, and maybe you won't get fined for that. So, that's cool."

--With Peyton Manning coming to Green Bay on Sunday, Packers first-year starter Aaron Rodgers isn't getting caught up in playing against one of the elite quarterbacks in the league for the first time.

So far, the only opposing QB with name recognition to have played the Packers this season is Dallas' Tony Romo. The Cowboys won that Week 3 game 27-16 at Lambeau Field.

Rodgers has never spoken with Manning, but he is an admirer of the two-time NFL MVP.

"From what I hear, he pretty much runs practice over there in Indianapolis. If something's not right, he starts it all over," Rodgers said. "He's just the ultimate pro, a great team player, a great guy, and he's funny on TV as well."

Rodgers has no interest, however, in having the Packers adopt the no-huddle offense in which Manning has functioned brilliantly.

"I like the offense just the way it is," Rodgers said. "I get a lot of input in it, as it is. So, I don't think there's anything that needs to be changed. He does run a fun offense. They're very good at what they do, and I feel like we're pretty good at what we do as well."

--Packers receiver Donald Driver could be in for a momentous day against the Colts.

Driver, a 10th-year player with Green Bay, has 528 career receptions. He needs only three to surpass Hall of Famer James Lofton as the top pass catcher in franchise history.

Driver also is on the cusp of a Lambeau Field record. Driver has 3,459 receiving yards at the Packers' hallowed stadium, only 18 yards short of the milestone held by former teammate Antonio Freeman.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Consecutive games in which Aaron Rodgers has thrown a touchdown pass of at least 40 yards. Rodgers is the first Packers quarterback to have attained the long-ball, end-zone hat trick since Lynn Dickey in 1976.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Peyton Manning, great player. I don't look it as a one-on-one matchup. But, obviously, it's important that I play well and get our offense in good situations and try to get the ball to our playmakers and let them make plays. I know he's going to try to do the same thing. Hopefully, we do it a little bit better." -- Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a first-year starter, on the challenge of playing the Indianapolis Colts' two-time league MVP on Sunday at Lambeau Field.
