Green Bay Packers Notes, Quotes 2009-04-10
--The Packers made an offseason roster swap with a pair of veteran backups April 6, releasing defensive end Kenny Pettway and re-signing tight end Tory Humphrey.

Green Bay brought Humphrey back for a minimum $460,000 for one year after not offering him a one-year tender of $1.01 million as a restricted free agent in February.

The Packers had signed Pettway a month into last season after he was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was a productive special-teams player but suffered a season-ending knee injury Nov. 30.

Green Bay's offseason switch to a 3-4 defensive scheme made Pettway, who would have had to move to linebacker, expendable.

--On the topic of linebackers, versatile holdovers Brandon Chillar and Desmond Bishop are being taught at the outset of the team's offseason workout program the nuances of playing both outside and inside in the new system.

"Being able to make that switch and transition between positions on a week-to-week basis helps," Chillar told Packers.com. "It's going to be a lot of learning, but I'm ready for it."

As it stands, the Packers' starters at linebacker would be Nick Barnett and A.J. Hawk on the inside and converted Pro Bowl defensive end Aaron Kampman and Brady Poppinga on the outside. Chillar or Bishop -- and perhaps both -- have starting experience with the team and could challenge for a starting job.

"To play more than one position and be more versatile is more credibility for myself," Bishop told the Web site.

--The Packers' legendary Lambeau Field could host a different type of football game in the future.

The stadium is among 70 potential host sites on a list submitted by a U.S. bid committee trying to get soccer's World Cup played in the country 2018 or '22.

The Packers have until April 17 to respond to the committee about whether they would have interest in hosting games.

However, Lambeau Field's playing-surface dimensions wouldn't be large enough to accommodate a mandatory grid of 115 yards long by 75 yards wide, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, for World Cup games to be played there.

Having an exhibition soccer game played there could be an option.

"Football is obviously first and foremost, making sure the field is in good shape for football," Packers president Mark Murphy told the Press-Gazette. "But to look for other events that we can bring to the community is something we're interested in. The idea is bringing in an event that can have a big impact on the community, and with World Cup soccer, you're exposing Lambeau Field to a whole new set of fans."

The Packers hosted a college hockey game between Wisconsin and Ohio State at Lambeau Field in 2006.

--Murphy will lead a contingent of representatives from the team on a Packers tailgate tour to four cities in Wisconsin from May 11 to 14.

Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins, receiver Jordy Nelson and Poppinga also are scheduled to travel the state in a bus and meet with fans.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Well, we're going to have to wait and see how he plays. We feel good about who he is, obviously. We made a tremendous commitment, but he's got to go out there and do it. And, he's up for the challenge. He's excited about being in the NFC, he's excited about being a Chicago Bear, and that's what the starting point will be for Jay Cutler." -- Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo on the team's trade for the former Denver Broncos quarterback, who will make his official debut with the Bears in the season-opening Sunday night game against the division-rival Green Bay Packers on Sept. 13 at Lambeau Field.
