What was widely speculated after Dom Capers was hired Jan. 19 as defensive coordinator to implement a 3-4 base scheme was confirmed Feb. 3 by head coach Mike McCarthy: Pro Bowl defensive end Aaron Kampman will be moving to outside linebacker.

"Aaron Kampman knows how to rush the passer, and the first responsibility for the outside linebacker position in the base personnel (of a 3-4 system) is to rush the passer," McCarthy said. "Aaron Kampman is going to be an excellent fit for what we're going to try to do as we move forward with this new scheme."

The 6-4, 265-pound Kampman is considered undersized to remain at the left-end position he primarily held in the 4-3 scheme employed by the Packers his first seven years in the league.

After signaling the radical switch in defensive philosophy with the addition of Capers, McCarthy tapped Kevin Greene, who flourished as a hybrid linebacker in the 3-4 scheme, to be the outside linebackers coach. Greene will take Kampman, among other candidates to play at the two outside linebacker spots, under his wing when the players report for the start of the offseason program in mid-March.

"You have a wide job description as an outside 'backer," Greene said. "It's a repetitive nature of working on that specific set of fundamentals and the skills and technique in order to master that. I can tell you we will have a ton of repetitions, doing the things that these outside 'backers need to do to play this position.

"They will be repped, repped and repped. It will be second nature for them to do."

McCarthy's overhaul of his coaching staff, mostly on defense, was completed with the hiring of well-traveled Dave Redding as strength and conditioning coordinator, new roles within the organization for John Rushing (offensive quality control coach) and Scott McCurley (defensive quality control coach) and the hiring of former league player Chad Morton as coaching administrator.

Redding, 56, returns to the NFL after a two-year break. His 23-year league tenure as a strength and conditioning coach included stops with the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins and, most recently, San Diego Chargers from 2002 to '06.

Redding filled the vacancy created by the end-of-season dismissal of Rock Gullickson, who headed Green Bay's strength and conditioning program the last three years. Redding said he would continue to utilize the free weights that Gullickson introduced to the team but will put a greater emphasis on conditioning specific to the players' positions on the field.

"It's about body preservation (for the entire season). Weight training helps that," Redding said. "I'm not here to teach them to be better weight lifters; that's not what I do. We're here to weight train and be better football players, be in better shape to play the game. That's my only concern. Two columns: win, lose. That's it."
