'This is rock bottom'
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- They're history.

The Detroit Lions have been known for their playoff failures with only one playoff win in the past 50 years and as part of the answer to the trivia question: Which NFL teams never have appeared in the Super Bowl?

All of that pales in comparison to the history the Lions made Sunday at Lambeau Field. Their 31-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers sent them to 0-16 -- the only team in NFL season to lose every game in a 16-game season.

They no longer will be remembered for their playoff failures, just failure, period.

"It sucks. I don't feel good about it at all, and there's nothing positive to say about the season," said Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, one of the few bright spots for the team, who caught nine passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns Sunday. "I mean, 0-16 and the first team not to win a game, I don't know what to say."

At least the Lions went out in style, setting records on top of records. For the first time in NFL history, a defense gave up two 100-yard rushers (Ryan Grant and DeShawn Wynn, each with 106 yards) and two 100-yard receivers (Donald Driver with 111 yards and Greg Jennings with 101) in a game.

The 6-10 Packers, who had lost five consecutive games going into Sunday, also had some season-best performances. Wynn's 73-yard touchdown run was the longest run from scrimmage all season while Driver's 71-yard touchdown catch was the longest reception of the year. Will Blackmon's 45-yard kickoff return to open the game matched the longest return of the season.

Beyond all of that, though, the numbers that matter most are 0-16.

"It's reality now," kicker Jason Hanson said . "There are no more words at this point. It's just the sadness of actually doing it. Everybody's embarrassed. When I say we feel bad, it's worse than that."

While the Lions lost this game in the same basic fashion as all the rest defensive collapses in the fourth quarter -- they added a new twist to this one: mental meltdowns.

In the second half, Lions linebacker Ernie Sims was penalized for unnecessary roughness for a late hit in the fourth quarter while cornerback Ramzee Robinson and running back Kevin Smith each were penalized for taunting their opponent.

"Yeah, stupid," Lions center Dominic Raiola said. "It's uncalled for. When you're in a game like that, you can't do that. It's dumb."

"That was disappointing," Lions coach Rod Marinelli said. "To win a game like this, they were trying as hard they could, they were emotionally ready to run and sometimes self-control is everything in big games and we didn't have it today."

Robinson committed the first gaffe, taunting receiver James Jones after a fourth-down pass went incomplete. In the fourth quarter, with the Packers leading 17-14, Sims committed a personal foul, hitting running back Ryan Grant while he was well out of bounds. It gave the Packers a first-and-10 at the Detroit 27-yard line and Green Bay eventually scored a touchdown to take a 10-point lead.

Perhaps the worst mistake was committed by Smith as the Lions were trying to rally from a 10-point deficit late in the game. The Lions were moving the ball efficiently and got down to the Green Bay 30-yard line with 4:04 remaining. Smith caught a pass that resulted in a 4-yard loss and went out of bounds into the Green Bay bench area. Several Packers were barking at him and Smith pushed the ball into the face of a Packers player.

Instead of putting themselves in a position to make it a one-score game, the Lions faced second-and-29 from midfield. They never threatened after that.

"I got a penalty; a bad decision, a very selfish decision," Smith said. "It'll probably never happen again in my career--hopefully. I let my emotions get the best of it. It's tough, but it's no excuse."

Smith said the frustration of a potential 0-16 season wasn't the cause for his actions.

"I wasn't thinking about 0-16 when I got the penalty, we were playing Football. It's just frustrating," he said. "You want to do good and you want to compete like everybody else and when things aren't going your way, it builds up. The great players and the great professionals don't do the stuff that I did."
