It now appears that what was once unthinkable–Brett Favre being traded to the Vikings–is a distinct possibility. With that being the case, the next question is just how much the Vikings should be willing to give up to get the veteran QB.
Let’s not even deal with the question of whether it’s better to go with Tarvaris Jackson rather than try to trade for Favre, that’s like saying you wouldn’t trade in a 2006 Honda Accord when someone’s offering you a 1991 Rolls Royce that’s still in very good condition.
Obviously, there aren’t a whole lot of trades of Hall of Fame quarterbacks in the final years of their career to go back and check out, but there does seem to be one comp. In 1993, the 49ers traded away 37-year-old Joe Montana to the Chiefs for first and third-round picks. Montana led the team to the AFC Championship game in 1993 and then took them back to the playoffs before retiring after the 1994 season. When you consider that the Chiefs haven’t won a playoff game since Montana left, it seems like he was worth the price in draft picks–if you can get to the AFC Championship game, you’re just a break or two away from a Super Bowl.
